It gazes down at us from afar, lighting our world. And it wonders.
The Sun sent a snaking tendril of plasma, cooling and shaping as it travelled the ether toward the Earth, one more solar flare among the countless measured and recorded by science. It lapped our atmosphere with the merest touch, taking final form – a man!
Sunspot is a portion of the Sun’s essence given humanoid form. He’s taken the alter-ego of Sol Peters, gifted fashion photographer. As a solar being he can fly, is immune to the effects of radiation, can regenerate whilst in sunlight and fire powerful blasts of solar energy or wield the energy like a sword.
As a hero, he’s unquestioned. He has a strong sense of right and wrong, and will always side with the good guys in any battle. Unfortunately he’s an arrogant self-centred egotistical SOB who acts like the sun shines out of his ass.
Which, in a way, it does.
Dirty little secret: In total darkness, Sunspot is (almost) completely powerless – and quite likes the solitude of being cut off from the Sun. As a photographer he’s grow to love working in the darkroom, hence his preference for using film rather than digital cameras. It’s the only time in his immortal life that he feels truly alone and at peace.
Notes: This character came into being from reading Booster Gold and feeling the urge to create a character who’s personality is less than perfect. As is my wont I fired up DAZ Studio to sculpt the face, then added a costume. I like Goldstar‘s white-and-gold vibe so used that (giving a nod to Marvel’s Sentry along the way) and added a golden cape. By then I’d decided to make him a Paragon. In the style of Superman, the idea of him drawing his powers from the Sun appealed, and it was only a short jump from there to making him originate from the Sun. When it came to his alter-ego, the image of our hero as an overbearingly arrogant (though talented) fashion photographer was a perfect fit. One quick trip into Hero Lab to stat him up, and Sunspot was born.
This is an ideal first Mutants & Masterminds character for a new player – with flight, a force-field and big blasty beams from his hands he ticks all the right boxes. Add in the Alternate Power which gives him a pair of sunswords instead and you’ve got a cool example of M&M’s AP mechanic at work. Rounded out with low-level sun-based Regeneration, some nifty skills, straightforward feat choices and an attitude, I reckon he’s a winner.
