Characters du Jour: Whips and Chains

“Guns. How many times do I have to say this. I don’t like guns!”
Two whips snaked out at the thugs, the tip curving like a live thing, snatching the Uzis clean out of their hands and tossing them clear across the warehouse floor.

“Oh, guys. Neither does he.”
From behind the hapless thugs came the faint rattle of chains, a pre-echo as a beast of a man faded into reality. The shackles around his limbs didn’t slow him at he effortlessly took hold of one of the thugs and disappeared. A moment later he returned,
sans thug, and without breaking stride hefted up the second, stepped again, and was gone.

The lithe acrobat known as Whips danced across the floor, her trademark weapons snaking sensually around her tiny form. Her partner, the beast known as Chains, entered this reality once more. She trotted to his side and looped her arm in his.

“So where did you leave them this time?”

Chains shrugged.

“Hmmmm. Ok then. Best not ask, eh?” replied Whips.

The things you find down dark alleyways. Some people say that the deepest, darkest shadows are paths to other worlds, where the links between the multiverse are at their weakest. And there are no deeper shadows than those found on a moonless night in a particular alley in the heart of New York. That is where the woman known only as Whips found the beast she calls Chains after the unbreakable shackles that encase his limbs. He lay, broken and bloodied, yet she stayed with him for that night and many more, tending his wounds and bringing him food she’d scavenged during the day. She talked, and he listened. As he healed companionship turned to friendship, then love, and much, much more.

When Chains was well on the way to recovery he revealed something of his abilities to Whips, teleporting them both around the globe at a rate that left him gasping with exhaustion and Whips wide-eyed with glee. Much later, he took her to strange alternate timelines where Earths’ history diverged from our own at different ages. She saw Nazi occupied America, high-tech Dinosaurs and the 51st Imperial Roman Legions. She also saw the sadness in Chains’ eyes, and asked if they could go home.

Now, they skirt the Dark Places of this world, doing what little they can to make the world a better place for all, guided only by their shared moral compass and sense of adventure.

In combat, Whips lives up to her name by using paired whips to great effect, disarming, binding and knocking down foes while acrobatically whirling, twirling and making a near-impossible target to hit. Chains takes a more direct approach, either wading in with both mighty fists, or (worse yet), grabbing then teleporting his foe to another part of this, or some other, Earth. Nasty.

Whips is your typical Brooklyn acrobatic optimist who does all the talking for both of them (and then some), while Chains is the strong silent type. He’s spoken no more than 5 words to Whips in all the time she’s known him, and she’s his closest (indeed, only) friend. Their bond goes far deeper than love; they need each other to survive, and anyone who dares to harm one will immediately face the wrath of the other a thousandfold.

Dirty little secret: Look closely and you’ll see that Chain’s shackles aren’t broken, but seem to fade into another reality. He’s still chained up, somewhen. Why is a mystery, and who knows what could happen were he ever to break free…….

And as for Whips; for a non-stop-talker she’s extremely close-mouthed about anything to do with her past. Not even Chains knows her true name (nor his own, for that matter), nor anything about her family or up-bringing. Sometimes signs leak out that there’s something in her history that’s raw and extremely painful for her to recall. Best to keep it buried, eh?

Notes: Whip-wielding gorgeous hyper-acrobat and teleporting dimension-crossing super-strong hairy beast. Nothing like starting the week with a couple of BDSM-themed superheroes. Oh yeh.

There’s something magical about pairing looks with ugliness. Whether it’s Beauty and the Beast, David & Victoria Beckham (though in this case David is the good looking one), or the Phantom of the Opera and Christine, it’s a classic trope that’s perfect as superhero fodder.

Chains is an easy build – just pump up STR and CON to Power Level max, add Teleport and lots of Power Feats, and you’re done. Whips is the more interesting build of the two with her Whips being treated as Devices. Her main attack is a “Blast” (ie, a ranged attack) but she can also use the whips to deflect slow-moving projectiles, move and (roughly) manipulate objects at range (Telekinesis, of sorts) and as rudimenatary line slingers. Add in a load of skills and feats, some decent equipment, a pickup truck and a warehouse base, and she’s a pretty well-rounded gal.
