“Alfredo, I know he’s your kin, but that boy will be the death of me and your business both if you don’t do something! He’s spilled the best wine all over the floor, fed today’s vegetables to the horses, pushed a Whitecloak into manure and managed to lose one of their swords – and that’s just this morning! Honestly, Alfredo, for the sake of my sanity can’t we just send him to The City? Please?”
Old Alfredo smiled, confident that his wife’s outburst, like all the others, would come to nought. She loved the boy as much as he did, even though she knew nothing of his secret. For his nephew the clumsy, likeable stablehand Thom Merkin was none other than The Grey Gauntlet, scourge of the whitecloaked Paladins of Pelor and the tyrant Arch Prelate!
Meanwhile, in a forest close by Merkin Manor Tavern…………….
Dirty Little Secret: Thom is in love with the Lady Patricia, the Arch Prelate’s daughter, and she has fallen for the dashing Grey Gauntlet. Little does she know of the social gulf that parts them.
Notes: Here’s lowly Thom Merkin AKA The Grey Gauntlet. By day he’s the world’s worst stablehand at his uncle’s Tavern, but by night he’s the deadly upholder of freedom for the common man. His druidic parents were sentenced to death for practicing pagan rites by the Church of Pelor. Following their execution young Thom stole the axeman’s dull steel gauntlet and swore this would act as a symbol against persecution of any kind. He wields paired handaxes and a hand crossbow with great skill, though his main talent is for stealth. Few could follow his movements through the forests of his homeland, and he uses his knowledge of nature (learned from his parents before their untimely demise) and athletic physique to great effect. It’s no surprise that the Arch Prelate continually raises the reward on his head.
Thom’s uncle Alfredo is the only one who knows his secret (though Esmera his wife suspects). Alfredo is a large, happy man who failed Wizard apprentiship in his youth, turning his gift for Alchemy toward wine making, bee-keeping and brewery. He owns a small vineyard to the back of the tavern which acts as a useful cover for Thom’s night-time excursions, and secretly makes Smokesticks and flash-bangs to aid the Grey Gauntlet in his escapades.
This character is geared toward solo play. He’s a true jack-of-all trades with a skill set that means he can heal himself, track and use stealth as well as pack quite a punch in combat. If you want to play as part of a group, add the 13 year old Emse, Alfredo’s granddaughter (her parents are in The City) as a comedy Wizard sidekick, or create The Gauntleteers as an adventuring party / freedom brigade under the Grey Gauntlet’s leadership.
Trivia fact: A merkin is a pubic wig. No, really.
