Evolution was wrong. Professor Maddock knew that somewhere, somehow, mankind’s ancestors had fallen from the path laid down for them by nature. Here we stood, the ultimate predator yet as vulnerable and dependent on each other as a new born babe. It didn’t make sense. It’s as if we’d climbed to the top of the evolutionary ladder then immediately regressed. Something must have happened.
Maddock believed the answer lay in our race memory, that font of all our primeval fears and superstitions. Locked amid our fear of night noises and things under the bed was the reason we fell. After much research, clandestine investment and experiment, Maddock found the answer within himself. Through technology, phychochemistry and worse, Maddock regressed; he became what out ancestors once were.
And what he discovered, shocked him.
They were so much faster, stronger and smarter than us; they deserved to rule the world in our stead. Maddock knew because that’s exactly what he became – a Throwback to the true masters of the evolutionary chain.
He became the thing we fear the most. Ourselves.
Notes: Beast, redux. Throwback is the peak of human evolution before the fall with Strength, Constitution, Dexterity and Intelligence right at the maximum allowed for Power Level 10 (allowing for trade-offs). He’s a supra-genius inside a body that can benchpress almost 3 tons whilst hanging upside down. Scary-ass powerful cool? Oh yes.
Here’s another thing about Mutants & Masterminds – you can use as much or as little of each of the subsystems as you want. There’s no “you have to have this many skills, that many at-will Powers” crap – just pick, choose and build exactly the character YOU want. Throwback here has just one “real” super-power, and that’s Low-light Vision. Everything else is awesome stats, a few useful Feats and lots of nice Trained Skills. Simple.
