One of my (many) obsessions over the last few weeks has been creating characters using Poser 6. It’s a stunning piece of software which can be both relaxing and extremely frustrating in equal measure. On the one hand, it’s like having a complete photo studio in a box with the most obedient of models; on the other, it’s annoying habit of locking up, crashing or failing to find textures or meshes that it found just a few minutes earlier can be downright swearworthy. Windows software. Ick. How do you people manage?!!?!! If you’re willing to work around these frustrations though, the effort is well worth it.
Here’s a grab-bag of my latest creations. Click for bigger pics, as ever.
Here’s Commander Ezra Ellis. I’ve been wanting to create a strong female pulp sci-fi space captain for a while, and this is the result. If EE ‘Doc’ Smith had created Captain Janeway (without the silly squeaky voice), this would be the result.
BTW, if you’re in any doubt about just how good Poser is, take a look at the pic below full sized. Stunning, I tell ya!
Hot damn. This wasn’t even on the highest settings.
Hollywood starlet, anyone?
This is a simple concept render for for someone who wouldn’t be out of place on Heroes. Regis is just an ordinary guy who can fire blasts of energy from his hands.
I mean, what’s odd about that?
Noonian Warrior Woman
Picture the scene. You’re characters in a D&D game, and a warrior woman walks into your camp, bold as anything. She’s wearing a bigass sword on her back, and a leather helmet which is sown up to cover her eyes completely. You’d take notice, I swear.
Noonian warrior women are trained to fight in the dark to meet the Evil Races on their home turf. They only remove their leather skullcaps very rarely by unpicking the stitching.
In D&D terms, they gain the Blindfighting feat, but gain Light Sensitivity as a Flaw in return.
Professor Cynthia Tellerman
The lady above is Professor Cynthia Tellerman, chemist and superwoman. She’s an all action gal, a scientist in the best Indiana Jones/Lara Croft mould, with just a little more raw power.
Cynthia was born with underdeveloped lungs, and would have died were it not for her pushy father and medical science. She spent much of her earliest life in an iron lung until her father – the original Professor Tellerman – developed a portable device. This restored her freedom, allbeit one permanently behind a metal mask.
Both she and her father worked to refine the tanks as she grew, improving the gas mixture to a point where it grants her much improved strength and agility.
She is now able to survive without the tanks for around 6 hours, but will literally suffocate without them for a greater time. Outside the mask, she is much more self conscious; the mask has been a part of her identity for so long that she feels naked without it.
Here’s Cynthia’s stats for Mutants & Masterminds:
