A few days ago I asked the following question:
- If you could bring in one law, just one. What would it be?
Now it’s my turn to answer.
I would impose a luxury tax on all food with more than 10g of fat per 100g. Anything less than 10g per 100 is tax free, just as nature intended.
Here’s the kicker though. All that tax money goes to the famine regions of the world as aid. All funding for the logistics of providing the aid comes from the UN; 100% of the tax goes to the people who need it the most.
It’s a win-win situation. We overconsumers can still eat our chocolate bars, MSG ladened microwave food and high-far spreads, while at the same time giving something back to the folks we’re taking the food from. Or, looking at it another way, healthy food becomes cheaper than unhealthy food for the first time in history. Which has to be a good thing.
That’s my law. Whaddya think?
