These are words you won’t hear in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest. Or “Shiver mi timbers”, or even “Pieces of Eight”. There’s plenty of rum though, and it looks like Jack Sparrow has drunk most of it.
This is pirates but not as you know them. OK, that’s not strictly true; a lot of the stereotypes are there, but these pirates are funny, comic, masterful creations where each character is a little gem in their own right.
Pirates is, quite simply, a brilliant, fun movie. Even the minor characters are well crafted, and that’s always a sign of a great film. It’s a hard movie to categorise, so I’ll try; it’s a comedy action fantasy adventure with a little horror thrown in for good measure. That’s a great thing; more movies should break genres like this, when it’s done so well.
If anything, I’d say Dead Man’s Chest is an even better movie that the first. The characters are just a little tighter woven, and Johnny Depp in particular really shines as Jack Sparrow. In the first movie he was good. In this one, he is Jack Sparrow. And I just love the way he runs……….
And did I mention the effects? The line where special effects start and costumes end has been completely blurred, especially when it comes to Davy Jones himself. He is a masterpiece of the art. I can’t wait to see the third movie.
If I had to give the movie a rating out of 10, I’d give it an 8 and a half. The problem is, I don’t know what could have been done to improve it. It’s got everything, including an undead monkey. I mean, what else can you ask for, really?
