The Call

I woke to the sound of crashing waves, the ocean’s heartbeat pounding against the immobile cliff face. It sounded, reverberated timelessly through the guesthouse, the walls creaking in aged response to the old, familiar call. I lay motionless, alert but still, listening to the dull roar, letting the waves wash over me here in my bed, tasting the salt in the air.
