They met at the edge of the fair. Big Jake had been watching her through the milling crowd, fascinated that the sunlight seemed to catch her hair no matter where she stood. It was as if she had her own personal spotlight hanging in the sky, a sun made just for her. She had turned and caught his eye not once, but twice, smiling with her beautiful red-round-white lips. Big Jake had become her invisible puppy for the rest of that evening, leaving his friends behind while they waited for a turn on the dodgems. They had watched him leave, laughing and wondering what had set his tail afire.
They hadn’t seen her. No one else had. Only Jake.
