- Christ and his apostles never came to America
So says Neil Gaiman in the preface to American Gods. It’s a throwaway comment, but one that hits the nail right on the head. Christ never made it to America. Not he, not Paul, Peter, Simon the Zealot or any of the rest. Maybe it was too far for the boats of the time. Maybe saving the Middle East was more important than saving a bunch of Native Americans. Perhaps the Native American’s gods didn’t want them there. I don’t know.
Either way, none of them quite found the time in their hectic schedules to get to that particular promised land.
Looking at the state of modern United States Christianity in broad sweeping terms though, it does look like one of the apostles did make it over. The one who believed completely. The one who submitted to authority rather than to God. The one who kissed Christ but had no love to give. The one who took the pieces of silver and put personal wealth above salvation of others.
I think you know which apostle I mean.
