Two of my favourite services are now under the same banner. Yahoo! has bought http://del.icio.us del.icio.us], the wonderful offline social bookmarking things. Considering they own Flickr too, that means they own two off the apps that defined the internet in 2005. Google owns at least four others (Search, Video, Earth and (of course) Gmail).
There two really are set to go head-to-head. It’s interesting that whereas google seem to be consentrating on tools-for-users, yahoo! is looking more towards community and sharing. Google seems to be able to do no wrong right now; yahoo! have more of a mixed success with their acquisitions hitting the right notes but their in-house stuff like Yahoo 360 pretty much falling flat. Let’s face it – when it comes to interface and layout, yahoo guys suck. Simplicity is in; green boxes and rounded corners are out, but they just don’t know or care.
I’m glad that they haven’t done much to change Flickr; I hope they do the same for del.icio.us, though I’d love to see more integration between the two. Tags. I love ‘em.
PS – if either company would like to buy Greywulf’s Lair………
