I think that the language that we have online today have been there for a long time in one way. We’ve always used abriviations for words, either because of lack of space, or because we’re lazy.
I know enough of both British and American english to know that there are words in both of them that neither of you would have a clue what they mean. Slang and dialects can change a language pretty badly.
And as for the importance in words and communication – sometimes it doesn’t always matter how many words you know or in how many languages they are if you don’t use them when it’s needed.
