Sometimes, a question comes along that annoys the heck out of me. This thread over on ENWorld’s forums has That Question, and I’m annoyed.
Ownership – in this case, of a character in the game – is a pet bugbear of mine. The fact that the question even had to be asked is wrong. It’s a game between friends. No one asks “who owns the friendship”, or the laughter, or the sharing times. The question doesn’t make sense; that in essence, that’s exactly what’s being asked here.
People (for people, read “Americans” and “people who want to be like Americans”) get way too possessive about ownership. This from a land with such an “in your face” attitude to freedom. Why not just take that freedom a little more literally instead of putting caveats on it all the time?
Who owns the weather, that tree, the sky? Who owns a thought, or a shared imagination, or markings on a piece of paper?
I’d have thought the answer would have been obvious.
Everyone, and no one.
